WordPress: Cross-site scripting
WordPress Core is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Quick Edit in all versions up to, and including, 7.0.2 due to insufficient escaping of user display names. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a higher privileged user accesses the affected administrative screens. This issue only affects sites with a large number of users. Other endpoint, parameter, role or implementation details not named in this export are not established by this record. Affected versions: 4.7.0 through 4.7.33, 4.8.0 through 4.8.28, 4.9.0 through 4.9.29, 5.0.0 through 5.0.25, 5.1.0 through 5.1.22, 5.2.0 through 5.2.24, 5.3.0 through 5.3.21, 5.4.0 through 5.4.19, 5.5.0 through 5.5.18, 5.6.0 through 5.6.17, 5.7.0 through 5.7.15, 5.8.0 through 5.8.13, 5.9.0 through 5.9.13, 6.0.0 through 6.0.12, 6.1.0 through 6.1.10, 6.2.0 through 6.2.9, 6.3.0 through 6.3.8, 6.4.0 through 6.4.8, 6.5.0 through 6.5.8, 6.6.0 through 6.6.5, 6.7.0 through 6.7.5, 6.8.0 through 6.8.6, 6.9.0 through 6.9.5, 7.0.0 through 7.0.2. The narrative requires the later administrator or higher-privileged user action described above even though the vector records UI:N.

This CVE was published Oct 22, 2026 and is one of 51 known issues for WordPress core.
Update, patch or deactivate.
The official author notes confirm remediation in 7.0.3. Update to the applicable fixed release or a later supported release. Official notes: https://wordpress.org/news/2026/08/wordpress-7-0-3-release/. Validate untrusted input and apply context-appropriate output escaping at the affected rendering point; enforce permissions independently of nonces. Only 7.0.3 is confirmed here; no fixed versions are inferred for the other affected branches, whose backports require separate confirmation.
A safe version is available, so updating to that version or later is the preferred remediation. If an immediate update is not practical, consider a targeted application patch or temporarily restricting the affected functionality.
Deactivate only when warranted by your risk profile, or when advised by your hosting provider in the limited circumstances where the vulnerability cannot otherwise be mitigated. If you’re unsure which action is appropriate, contact Fused or your hosting provider for guidance.
